“Today’s been a trying day, which factored into my movie selection. My options included a heavy Oscar contender, horror films that ran the spectrum of ridiculous, some subversive dramas, and a couple cheesey comedies. I actually almost went with the most disturbing of the dramas (and in typing this am reconsidering my choice) because I find that sort of thing soothing (don’t ask). But ultimately, I decided to go with the dumbest and most mindless of the comedies: Without a Paddle. I haven’t seen this one in years, but there was a time when this would have easily made it to my favorites list. I’m hoping Seth Green, Matthew Lillard, and Dax Shepard will take my mind off the sick kitty and other issues troubling me.
And watching this now, all I can think is damn I used to have shit taste in comedies. This is a fact I know is true, given some of the bad ones that still make my favorites list simply for nostalgia. All of the jokes are falling flat, and each of the guys are trying way too \m/ hard. I don’t know how much of it I found funny back in the day. I think it was always about that trio of actors. Esp since this was one of Dax’s first post-Punk’d outtings. But oh man this movie is cheesy.”
