“I’m actually really happy that Percy Jackson got a sequel made. When the first movie came out, everyone was scratching their heads at it. It was presented as something familiar, but no one quite knew what it was. And there was also talk that it was an attempt to be the next Harry Potter. Anyways, I was intrigued enough to go see the first one. I thought it was a lot of fun, but the movie felt like something was lacking. But it did spark enough interest that I decided to pick up the books. The writing’s a little juvenile, but really fun and imaginitive. I’d always had a slight interest in Greek mythology, and I thought the books were a fun way to revisit them. My roomie at the time is Greek, so I’m pretty sure I made her read them. Or at least, I meant to make her read them. I don’t remember.
Anyways, while I enjoyed the series, it seemed like most of America ignored it. The domestic box office was dismal. Soooooo why on earth did they decide to make a sequel? Turns out, the foreign market ate it up. It more than recouped overseas, so a sequel was greenlighted. Thank you foreign market!
So how was the sequel? Eh, about as good as the original. Nothing amazing, but certainly a fun ride. It’d been a while since I read it, but I was getting small flashes of memories watching the film. The demi-gods went on their adventures, sorry, quests. Objects from ancient mythology were modernized. There were some great adults in the cast. Pierce Brosnan was replaced by Anthony Stewart Head as Chiron. As a big Buffy fan, I a) prefer the latter and b) wish he would have had more to do. Stanley Tucci stole scenes as Dionysus. But the real win was Nathan Fillion as Hermes. If only he had more than just the one scene. Incidentally, this is the second movie of the summer that Fillion is in that has “”Monsters”” in the title.
There really isn’t much more to say about it. I for one hope that it does well enough overseas that we can keep the adventure going. While on the surface there’s a lot of Potter comparison, I really think it’s a unique trip to the movies
